Behavior Tips, Charts, and Forms

One of the first things I was told as new teacher was the importance of behavior. You couldn't teach them until you had firm control of their behavior.  Sometimes this is easier said than done!  All is takes is one student who can affect the chemistry of an entire class.  

When you have one of "those" classes, you are often digging into your bag of tricks on a daily basis.  If your bag of tricks is running a little low, I have just the packet for you!  Included in this packets are ideas, charts, forms, and other goodies that I have used when I had those years when my closet was stocked with Tylenol, candy, and my favorite beverage with caffeine.

February Quick Prep Writing Center

Are you looking for a writing center that you can set up up for the entire month of February? It is a center that is quick and easy to set up. Once your students learn the format the first week, you (hopefully) won't have to spend too much time go over instructions for the center the following weeks. Each week your students will complete a writing assignment. There are two to choose from. One has three words and the other has the three words from the first assignment plus an additional word.

There are group signs included in case you put your students in writing ability groups. There are also 9 extension cards that you can use to differentiate these assignments. The signs include:

• Circle the vowels 
• Underline the blends 
• Color the boxes with -r controlled vowels 
• Picture should have enough details to show the setting 
• Picture should have enough detail to show what is happening 
• Use at least 5 colors in your picture 
• Writing assignment #1: Use each word in a sentence 
• Writing assignment #2: Write a story using the words on your assignment 
• Writing assignment #3: Write a story using at least 6 words from the word bank.

The Groundhog Day assignment includes the following words: groundhog, sun, cloud, and shadow.

The dental health assignment includes the following words: smile, tooth, toothfairy, and money.

The Presidents' Day assignment includes the following words: Lincoln, Washington, country, and President.

The Valentine's Day assignment includes the following words: valentine, give, heart, and friends.

FREE - Color Your Writing

This is a new freebie for you!

Encourage your students to become better writers by replacing some of their overused words with new words.

This can be used as a lesson or set up as a center.

Directions:

•Introduce common overused words.

•Students will look at a story or journal entry that they have previously written for a word(s) that is/are overused.

•They will choose one word from this story/entry to use for this interactive journal printable assignment. (2 printables are included)

•After finishing the interactive journal assignment, the student will go back to their story and replace the overused word with their new word choices.

•Rewrite the story on the included story paper.

Christmas gifts for co-workers

'tis the Season to go shopping . . . .

Do you have your Christmas shopping done yet?  Do you exchange gifts with co-workers?  I like to give co-workers a little sweet treat this time of year.  Since we are often feeling a little extra stress this time of year, it only makes sense to give your stressed out friends something from teachers' 3 favorite food groups:  salty, sweet, and chocolate.  I personally don't care for chocolate so I use white chocolate or almond bark.  If you are a chocolate lover, you can use traditional chocolate.

I love to give my friends Holiday Pretzel Rods.  There are only a few ingredients.  It doesn't take very long to make them and your friends will love them!

First, melt the almond bark.  You can melt it on the stove top or microwave.  If you are using a microwave, use a deep bowl.  I have found that microwaves vary a lot!  So, start with a couple of minutes.  If it is not melted, keep adding time until it is smooth and creamy.

Dip your pretzel rod in bowl and spoon more on top until the bottom 3/4 is covered.  You will need to let it drip for a minute or so.

Hold the dipped pretzel rod over a small bowl and sprinkle with holiday sprinkles.  The great thing about this treat is you can change the color of the sprinkles with the seasons.

Put the pretzel rods on wax paper to dry.

If you are giving these as individual gifts, you can put them in clear treat bags.  It is very easy to differentiate (there's a teacher word for you!) this if you have teacher friends who celebrate different holidays.  Use different sprinkles and use different colored ribbon on their treat bag.

Christmas - FREE sample

Do you follow my Facebook page?  If so, you are probably familiar with my Buggy for Reading packets because that was one of my recent freebies.  I just finished a Christmas themed Buggy for Reading packet.  It is on the first grade reading level.

This packet contains:

Five reading assignments are included that you will use when you meet with your small groups.  You will rate your students' fluency at the bottom of the page.  Send the page home for homework.  The parents will rate their child's fluency the next two times that they read it.  

When your students have finished reading all 5 pages and returned their homework, give them the happy note above.  You can have a FREE copy of it.

The Sentence Shuffle activity can be used as a small group lesson or as a literacy center.  Students cut apart the sentence, rearrange the words into sentences, and practice reading the sentences.

Buggy for Writing is an extension assignment for the Sentence Shuffle lesson.  Students may choose one of the sentences to glue on this page, copy the sentence, and illustrate it.

 Students will circle the first letter with a green crayon, circle the last punctuation mark with a red crayon, trace, and copy the words on the Write On! assignment.  This can set up as a writing center or sent home for homework.

These 18 cards can be used a variety of ways.  Use them to introduce new words during your small group lesson.  Make two copies of the pages and make them into a memory game.  Copy these pages, put them on a shower curtain ring to make a personal word wall.  Students would love the hands-on aspect of having their own personal holiday word wall!
